Roller Derby is "For Real"

When I tell people that I am a member of a local roller derby team I am usually confronted with the inevitable question, "None of that stuff you do is real, is it?"
~Real Derby Girls~

What does that mean, I often wonder.  Are we just make believe women, participating in a make believe sport? Perhaps many believe that roller derby is all staged, a well thought out, rehearsed act between two teams of magnificent actors, much like professional wrestling.  Well, believe me, if any of us could act that good, or were as talented as some of the men and women in the WWF, we would not have to work as hard as we do to make what happens out on that track for an hour a reality.

~Line-Up~
All of the people that I have met so far that have decided to dedicate their lives to this sport, and yes, despite what many think, it is a legitimate sport, have done just that, dedicated their lives.  There is something about roller derby that changes you, draws you in and pulls you out of whatever shell you may have been curled up and comfortable in and makes you into a stronger person, both physically and mentally and that is real.

~Bake Sale Babe~
Recently my team and I had our first REAL bout in Canada against a group of women who showed us enormous hospitality and displayed excellent sportsmanship.  Getting there took real effort on our part.  The team practiced hard and when not practicing held fundraisers and went out knocking on doors to raise the money for the trip.  The trip itself was exhausting, 16 hours long, and by bout time the girls were tired, and nervous and despite this they never gave up and although our team did not win, we did not walk away with a loss either.  We made some amazing friends, both on the opposing team and in the forms of the veteran guest skaters who were kind enough to come get knocked around with us newbies, and the sense of accomplishment and pride at finishing what we set out for will leave me with a high for weeks to come.

One of our teammates was injured rather severely during the bout.  That's real.  And when she needed to stay behind and have surgery, another one of our teammates stepped up and stayed with her, despite having her own family and job to come home to.  There was no question about it, that loyalty between us as a team, that's real.  The Canadian skaters' hospitality did not end when the bout was over either; they visited our teammate in the hospital before and after her surgery and made sure that both of our ladies that were left behind had a network of love and support while they were so far away from their loved ones back home.  That's real.

So, when people ask me if roller derby is real I get a little frustrated.  Yes, we like to wear funky clothes and our tights might be a bit bright and our faces a bit painted, but we practice hard, hit hard and there is nothing choreographed or staged about the competitions between the women on the track.  None of the skaters are paid to do what they do, they do it out of a passion for the sport and for the camaraderie that comes along with it.

Is roller derby real?  Hells yeah baby.

More Than Just Cute Socks

Well, it's been a while again, hasn't it?  What a busy summer we're having!  Between Scott's new work schedule and keeping up with our newly minted two-year-old, the days are just flying by!
~Movie Star~

That being said, I've managed to finagle some me time, finally, after what seems like an eternity of pregnancy, and late night feedings and diaper changes and doctor's visits.  Has it really been almost three years since we started down this incredible road called "Parenthood"? Whew!
~Happy Birthday, Romilly~

Roller Derby.  Sigh.  Where have you been my whole life?  Where were you when I was young and full of spunk?  The thing is, I knew you were out there.  You've courted me from the sidelines of my oft chaotic life for many years now.  Didn't I see you once in a bathroom stall in a dimly lit bar in a new an unfamiliar Seattle?  You were there, I'm sure, a blazing pink or maybe neon green poster luring women away from their cautious little lives into an thrilling and somewhat addictive "hobby" even then.  And surely we met again many times throughout those lazy, crazy,  and somewhat hazy, single-girl Sea-town years. Like star-crossed lovers the timing just wasn't right.  We were both so young, but oh! what I wouldn't give to know then what I know now (or at least have now some of the stay-out-and-play-all-day stamina I had then!)
~Spunk~

Finally, the timing has clicked, so it seems, and though the spirit is willing, oh how the flesh yowls in agony!  To quote the famous Babe Ruthless "I am in love with this!" but it seems that my desire to be good and actually being good are two different things these days and the oldie but goody "patience is a virtue" has meaning for the first time in my life.
~Regulators~

I am so amazed by the heart I see in the women around me at the practices.  No two girls on the team are the same off the rink but when we get out there it all changes and the Derby Desire takes us over heart and soul.  Women who may not have made it through a home workout tape will sweat for two hours in one-hundred degree heat perfecting their crossovers and jamming to score points like it meant life or death.  Injuries abound and the pain of the actual wound is less than the pain of having to sit on the sidelines and watch their sisters skate.
~Crash~

I can't wait to see how our team progresses over the coming months and to be a part of that progression.  In the mean time look forward to more posts (when I get around to it) about Derby and the ladies.  And remember, Roller Derby girls are more than just cute socks, I wouldn't mess with us!

Cathartic in the Kitchen

Sometimes I get really stressed.  No, really it's true.  I don't have many hobbies that undo the knots and tension that come with the balled up yuckiness that comes with my stress.  I like my knitting.  That's as close to meditating as I can get right now.  Knit, knit, knit, knit.  Very, very stress relieving.  Unfortunately, with wee Rom in the mix it's not something I can just plop down and do when my nerves promise to get the better of me.  However, when I find that the manic parts of me are itching and scalding I naturally gravitate towards large kitchen projects.  I found myself in the midst of one such project on Monday and decided that it would be nice to photograph the results as I went.  I wasn't stressed about anything in particular; I think it just hit me that the week was going to start up again.
~Gathering~
I decided to make my special Sweet Potato Enchiladas.  They are time consuming, delicious and make massive left overs.  It was the perfect way to spend my afternoon.

Recipe:
Makes a double (about 3 doz) batch
5-6 Sweet Potatoes
1 bunch green onions
1 block of full fat cream cheese (use the low-fat if you must)
Cumin, chili powder and oregano to taste
Tortillas (as fresh as you can get them)
1 large can of Enchilada Sauce (I use El Pato)

Boil the Sweets until very tender and mashable.  Add cream cheese, spices and sliced green onions to a bowl with peeled sweet potatoes.  Mash together for filling.  Warm tortillas in oil over medium heat.  Line each tortilla with about 2 tbsp of filling and roll up.  Line up close together in a 13x9 pan.  Cover with Enchilada sauce and cheddar cheese (if desired).  You can also top with olives, green onions and cilantro if you're feeling fancy.
Cook at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes or until heated through.  Serve with sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, etc.  Yum.

New Camera

The wait is over!! We finally found a new baby to replace our lost little Elph.  After careful consideration we decided on the Canon Elph SD 3500 IS and we could not be happier.  With it's touch screen interface and some  nifty features that we did not have on the 890 we are snap-happy campers!  Here are a few of the first shots we took with our new baby...

And speaking of new babies, our good friends Ryan and Tiphanie just welcomed their new bundle of joy into the world! Introducing Noah Ryan Sams! Congrats to the new family :)

Fair Friend I Shall Return to Thee

Poor Neglected Blog,
How I'd love to dote on thee.
But now I must the windows scrub,
the laundry rub,
the socks  mend,
the dinner roast,
the bread toast,
the baby rock,
the pantry stock.
Ah.
The day it seems doth never end
and so my Blog I shall not tend.
But know this fair and tireless friend,
I shall return to thee again.

The End.
